Ripping-off the Public with 0845 numbers

Public organisations over-charging the public for calling them

East Berkshire College is the latest public body to rip-off telephone callers with an 0845 number.

0845 numbers are technically known as "premium rate revenue sharing numbers" where the number's owner gets a share of the profits whenever someone calls the number.

Telephone calls to numbers beginning with 01, 02 and 03 are classified as normal rate calls. However calls to 0845 numbers can cost between 5p and 35p per minute depending on your network.

01, 02 and 03 calls are often included in users' free minutes but calls to 0845 numbers can be a financial nightmare especially for mobile users.

Often organisations with 0845 numbers will falsely state 0845 is a local rate number. Local call rates disappeared many years ago.

I urge callers to East Berkshire College to save their money by using 01753-793000 instead of the 0845 number.

Thames Valley Police has scandalously been ripping-off the public for years with their 0845 number. Callers are urged to use the much cheaper normal rate telephone number 01865-841 148 instead. It is exactly the same as the 0845 number but will usually save you money. The 01865-841 148 number is hidden away in an obscure part of the police web site.

Putting profits before people is a disgusting attitude for any public body claiming to serve the public. It should be stopped forthwith.
