Burnham's George Inn to close after failed talks

Before Christmas re-opening with new landlord expected

The George Inn, Burnham High Street, where a customer died at the weekend, is to close on, or before, Wednesday, 14 September 2016.

The landlord and premises supervisor, Chris Faulkner, is leaving after talks with the property's owner Wellington Pub Company.

The pub is expected to re-open with a new tenant in the next few months.

The pub's Mr Christopher Michael Faulkner, of Long Readings Lane, Britwell and of High Street, Burnham, and Mrs Lynne S Booker of Calbroke Road, Britwell, were arrested and questioned by police following complaints made in 2015 about a series of events spanning 14 months.

Court records reveal they have been jointly charged with Conspiracy to Steal.

Mr Faulkner and Mrs Booker were previously employed at Britwell Parish Council as bar manager and parish clerk respectively.

Their provision trial date is Monday 5 December 2016 at Reading Crown Court. Mr Faulkner's court case reference is T 2016 7188 and Mrs Booker's is T 2016 7186.

Detailed information is unavailable while criminal proceedings are active.

The current court schedule shows:

  • A pre-trial (case management) hearing on Wednesday, 17 May 2017.
  • A two-day trial at Reading Crown Court commencing Monday, 26 June 2017.

The pub is currently in the process of being sold to an unknown entity by the Wellington Pub Company, part of Criterion Asset Management. Locals believe the rear garden part, and possibly the whole of the site, may become a garden centre business.
